Civil projects combine moving plant, traffic or rail interfaces, existing assets and strict principal requirements. A contractor laying services in a live corridor differs from one working on a closed greenfield site.
We consider the specific methods, sites and contractual requirements of this occupation before approaching available markets.
What changes the insurance assessment
Road occupancy and traffic management; rail possessions and corridor access; service relocation; working near live assets; night work; subcontractors; design scope; rail or government contract conditions.
Covers to discuss
Public/products liability, contract works, plant, professional indemnity and environmental liability as needed. Check rail-specific restrictions, traffic management activities, property in care/custody/control and contractual indemnities.
Road and rail project boundaries
Describe work on live roads, rail possessions and greenfield civil sites separately, including traffic control, proximity to operational lines and whether utilities are relocated. Underwriters will need to know the largest contract value, project duration, night work, subcontracted activities and any design responsibility. For rail work, clarify who grants possession and controls access to operating infrastructure.
Public liability, contract works, plant and design-related professional indemnity serve different purposes. Examine vibration, underground services, property being worked on and contractual indemnities in the proposed wordings. A principal’s project policy may cover some works but leave the contractor’s own operations or liabilities to be insured elsewhere.
Information to prepare
Provide a clear description and turnover split of your activities, locations, project values, required liability limits, licences, subcontractor arrangements, current policy and claims history. Include relevant contracts and methods for the higher-risk work. We will identify any further information underwriters need.
Questions contractors ask
“Does a certificate of currency satisfy the rail principal’s insurance clause?” Check the actual policy and endorsement against the clause. “Are subcontractors automatically included?” Their status varies by wording and contract.
